A resolution seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was defeated in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (March 11, 2026) through a voice vote amid intense protests and sloganeering by opposition members.
The motion was taken up while Jagdambika Pal was presiding over the proceedings of the House. Opposition members were demanding an apology from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and continued raising slogans, creating a noisy atmosphere in the chamber.
Despite repeated appeals from the Chair, the protesting members refused to take their seats. Jagdambika Pal urged the opposition to maintain order so that the resolution could be formally put to a vote. However, as the disruptions continued, he proceeded with the voting process and sought the opinion of the House.
The motion seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla was subsequently rejected through a voice vote. Following the announcement of the result, Jagdambika Pal adjourned the House for the day.
Earlier during the proceedings, Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of frequently skipping important parliamentary discussions. Shah said that Rahul Gandhi often travels abroad or attends party-related engagements instead of participating in key parliamentary debates.
“Rahul Gandhi has to travel to different places for party purposes and publicity, but he skipped the President’s Address, the Budget discussion, and debates on Article 370. During important parliamentary sessions he travels abroad and later claims that he is not allowed to speak,” Shah said in the House.
The developments led to sharp reactions from opposition members, who protested in the House and demanded an apology from the Home Minister, further intensifying the disruption during the session.
The Lok Sabha was eventually adjourned for the day following the rejection of the resolution.
